MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Casey Affleck Makes His Mark

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA – 24 KARAT GOLD RATING

Independent film continues to carve its mark on the Hollywood block, giving creatives a lane to show off new ideas.  Manchester by the sea, a 2016 drama, both written and directed by Oscar nominee Kenneth Lonergan is a sneaker.  This movie really caught me by surprise even though, as of this writing it received a 96% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes.  The film stars Casey Affleck who plays Lee Chandler, a discreet handyman of a Boston apartment building who is willed guardianship of his 16-year-old nephew following the unexpected death of the teen’s father, Lee’s only sibling.  Amid doubts, the unfortunate circumstance surrounding Lee’s new role as guardian opens up wounds from his own tragic past forcing him to have to take on more than he initially signed up for.

After premiering at the Sundance film Festival in January of 2016, Amazon Studios jumped into action agreeing to distribute the film for the limited release beginning November 18, 2016.  On a small scale budget of just $8.5 million dollars, Manchester by the sea earned over 5 times the initial investment, grossing $42 million dollars worldwide before its national release.  With a Golden Globe under the belt and six Academy Award nominations, Manchester by the sea is on a well-deserved road to glory.  Released on November 18, 2016, this film is worth 2h and 17m of your time. Manchester by the sea gets a 24 karat solid gold rating.
