Remy VS. Nicki
Remy Ma ultimately silences Nicki Minaj. I would not be a certified product of hip hop if I did not chime in on the latest hip-hop battle. Young Money’s Nicki Minaj and Terror Squads Remy Ma are now at each other’s throats. This has been going on behind the scenes for a minute since 2007 to be exact. Nicki Minaj never confirmed but supposedly took shots at Remy on her mixtape “Playtime Is Over“ in 2007. Remy approached Minaj about her lyric ” Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown” Adding more fuel to the fire, there were also unconfirmed claims that the two were romantically involved at one point. In 2008 Remy began serving an 8-year prison sentence in a Westchester woman’s facility following 2007 assault and weapons charges. The 6-year incarceration left an open lane for Nicki Minaj to become a superstar in her own right. Nicki Minaj was the only substantial female persona during Remy’s 6-year intermission awarding her Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the 2016 Bet Awards.
Now that the backstory leading up to this so called battle is out of the way, we can get to the purpose of this post. First and foremost I have never been a fan of the female rapper persona unless your M.C. Lyte, Roxanne Shante or Antoinette. Recently I had to give Young M.A. her props as well. Other than the female artists previously mentioned, you had to be on point and pretty clever to get my attention. With that said, No, I never could get into what Remy Ma was selling. Remy always seems like she is trying to hard to make her presence felt, her flow also needs some tightening. On the other hand, Nicki Minaj, whether she writes her own verses or not, always had a more distinctive polished style and flow.
Everybody is sucking Remy Ma right now, she did this, she did that but only a few are asking if she really wrote her verses. Did her husband Papoose write “Shether“? I would not be surprised if he did, Remy is not the dopest lyricists. Where did these magical bars come from? Perhaps Remy is just looking for a quick come up by any means necessary. It would make sense for her to keep the momentum going with the success of the collaborative single “All The Way Up” feat. French Montana. Remy is also heavily featured on a new collaborative album with Fat joe called Plata o Plomo, released February 17th, 2017. Looking at all the pieces everything appears to be conveniently structured if you ask me.
In a perfect world, I would have chosen Nicki Minaj over Remy ma any day. As of this post, It’s been several days already and Nikki still has not responded to Remy’s murder bars. At this point, we can no longer call this a battle as it’s pretty clear who’s still standing after the smoke has cleared. It was not enough to completely expose Nicki on her unforgiving diss track “Shether“, she continues to taunt Nicki on her most recent diss track called “Another One“. I was definitely rooting for Nicki and patiently waiting for a response but unfortunately, it never came. Remy either finished Nicki to the point that she does not know how to respond or Nikki does not feel like Remy is enough of a threat to respond. Either way, not a good look for an artist like Nicki Minaj.
If Nicki does finally decide to respond it would be a fantastic look for Remy. These are two different animals on two different sides of the ring in the same arena. Nas showed us that it’s never too late to clap back when he waited months to respond to Jay Z’s “Takeover” in 2001 with “Ether“. Right now it’s a good play for Remy but if she’s smart she won’t put her guard down just yet.
